Railways on the Air
This year we were lucky enough to put on this event at Fenland Light Railway, as a result of information from Alan G8 XLH and a follow up by Peter G6 AYU.

The railway, a 7 1/4 inch gauge line with steam and diesel trains is located at Ramsey Mereside.  We set up on Friday 21st Sept with a howling gale making antenna erection extremely difficult, but we succeeded thank to the stalwart efforts of the usual team.
The 80 metre Carolina Windom was the antenna of choice plus the 2/70 white stick. We had planned to use the gazebo but because of the foul weather predictions for the weekend, the nice FLR members offered us a position in the cafeteria. A dream location, having set up the radios on Saturday morning we then, if not operating, enjoyed tea, cake and various goodies all day both days.

This event was the first test for 2 extension speakers which Alan had converted (see articles page) to allow up to 4 headsets at a time to be used while the speaker was still working. They proved most helpful. We had a successful weekend with a total of 121 contacts of which 16 were other railways. 2 other Sp/ Ev stations were worked. A few contacts were made on 2 mtrs but the band of choice was 80 mtrs, an all round good effort. The volunteers at FLR were brilliant, they helped us in many ways and were very interested in what we were doing, what a great group of people. They even put on a PADARC special train at the end of Saturday. We have been invited back next year, it would be rude to refuse.

On behalf of the Events Team, thanks to the members who helped over the weekend. Finally, Grateful thanks to the Volunteers at FLR who made us so welcome.
